What counts as urgent in Eugene

Some lock problems can wait for a convenient day. These usually cannot:

• After a break-in. Call the police first and let them see the damage before anything is repaired. Photograph the door, frame and lock for your records. The next job is making the door secure again.
• An exterior door that will not lock in a rental. Under Eugene's Rental Housing Code, locks for exterior doors count as essential services (EC 8.415), which get a shorter response period than routine repairs (EC 8.430). • Locked out in winter weather. Winter is the wet season across most of Oregon, per NOAA's state summary. Being shut out in cold rain with a small child, an older relative or someone unwell is urgent even if the lock itself is simple.

Fire season adds a reason to plan ahead: Oregon's 2020 Labor Day fires burned more than 2,000 structures. Keep a spare house key and a spare car key or fob in an evacuation bag so a lost key does not become the next emergency.

Safety first

• If a door has been forced and you think someone may still be inside, stay out and wait for police.
• Do not climb in through a window or force a door you are locked out of; a broken frame turns a lockout into a repair.
• Do not share codes or hand over keys to anyone you did not contact yourself.
