Which door you are locked out of

"Locked out" can mean different things in Portland, depending on the building. In a Pearl District high-rise condominium or warehouse-to-loft conversion, it may be the street door, the garage, the elevator or your own unit door. The shared doors belong to the building, so its manager or association handles them; name the one door you need opened.

A house is the reverse: one household with several ways in. Ladd's Addition, in the Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood, dates from 1891 and is mostly bungalows and Craftsman homes built between 1905 and 1930. It is one of fewer than 20 areas in Portland with alleys, so list the alley gate, the back door and the garage in your request along with the front door.

NOAA's 2022 climate summary for Oregon says most areas get the bulk of their precipitation in the winter months, and Portland is in the Willamette Valley, on the wetter side of the Cascades. On a rainy evening, being shut out is an exposure problem. Wait somewhere dry, such as a neighbor's home, a nearby shop or your car, rather than on an open porch. If a small child or anyone who needs help is alone inside, call 911 first.

When the landlord changed the locks

Under ORS 90.375, a tenant unlawfully removed or excluded by a landlord may seek a court order to recover possession or end the rental agreement, and can recover up to two months' periodic rent or twice actual damages, whichever is greater.
