Old Town storefronts and Pearl District offices

The Skidmore/Old Town Historic District, roughly Naito Parkway to 3rd Avenue and Everett Street to Oak Street, became a National Historic Landmark in 1977. It was recognized for cast-iron commercial architecture and for its role as a major 19th-century West Coast port. For a business in a building from that era, say whether the storefront door is original before any work is planned. Work that stays inside the existing lock, such as rekeying a cylinder, leaves a historic door and frame as they are. The Pearl District, between W Burnside, the Willamette River, NW Broadway and I-405, was reclassified from industrial to mixed use in the mid-1980s. Its warehouses, light industry and rail yards gave way to conversions, and some of those buildings now hold offices. In a multi-tenant building the street entry, elevators and shared corridors usually belong to the landlord, while your suite door, interior offices and storage rooms are yours to manage. Check the lease, and tell the property manager before changing a lock the building also needs to open.

Keys and staff turnover

Every employee, cleaner or contractor who leaves with a key is a reason to recheck who can get in. Common approaches:

• rekey the affected locks and issue new keys only to current staff
• set up a master key system, so a manager carries one key while staff open only their own areas
• keep a key log of who holds which key and when it came back
