What makes a lock problem urgent

Some lock problems can wait. Others cannot:

• an exterior door that will not lock after a break-in or a failed lock
• a lockout with a person or pet at risk inside, or with someone outside unable to stay dry in winter rain
• keys lost in an evacuation: NOAA's 2022 climate summary for Oregon records that the 2020 Labor Day fires burned more than 2,000 structures, so a spare house key and a spare car key or fob belong in an evacuation bag

Safety comes first. If anyone is at risk, call 911 before anything else.

After a break-in

Call the police first, and do not go inside if someone may still be there. Leave the door, frame and lock as they are until officers have seen them, and take photos. Then the priority is a door that closes and locks. A forced door often has a split jamb or a torn strike plate as well as a damaged lock, so describe the frame too. If you rent, tell your landlord. Getting the address right

Give the full address with its N, NE, NW, S, SE or SW prefix. The city added a South section in 2018 after leading zeros in Southwest addresses confused emergency dispatch and mapping software. In Collins View and South Waterfront, an address such as 0100 SW became 100 S, so check the prefix, especially in those areas.

When you send a request

Say what happened, which door or vehicle is involved, whether anyone is hurt or inside, and whether police have been called. Then send an emergency locksmith request, or see house lockout if you are simply locked out. The Portland page has the wider local notes.
