Will your door take a smart lock?

Most smart locks replace a standard deadbolt, so the first question is whether the door has one, and that depends on age. By 2024 Census Bureau estimates, 75.1 percent of homes in Meridian were built in 2000 or later, while 27.8 percent of Idaho Falls homes predate 1960.

• Houses with a drilled deadbolt can often take a smart deadbolt in the same holes.
• 1950s houses may have only a knob lock, so a smart deadbolt means drilling the door and fitting a strike in the frame.
• Older districts. Doors in the Eleventh Street Historic District often belong to Craftsman bungalows, most built between 1905 and 1921, and the first homes on Ridge Avenue were stone and basalt. Check door thickness and backset against the lock maker's range before buying.

A motorized bolt also needs a door that latches without a push or a lift, so sort out any dragging first.

Cold weather and batteries

Plan for the months the city's snow-removal parking rules are in force, November 14 to March 15:

• Batteries weaken in the cold, so a lock may report low power sooner in winter. Change them at the first warning, using the types the maker allows.
• A keypad facing open weather collects snow and ice; a porch roof helps.
• Keep a mechanical backup: choose a model with a key cylinder or another override, and keep that key within reach if the batteries die while you are outside.

Rentals and divided houses

If you rent, or live in part of an older house divided into units, you may need the owner's agreement. Per the Attorney General's Landlord and Tenant Manual (July 2026), a lease should set out when the landlord may enter, so read yours before changing a lock. In a divided house, say which entrance the lock is on.
