How winter wears on locks here

Idaho Falls writes winter into its city code. The snow-removal parking rules in Title 9, Chapter 5 cover November 14 to March 15. Across those months, doors and locks meet the same few problems:

Meltwater in the latch. Snow that melts by day can run into the latch and cylinder and turn to ice overnight. A key that will not turn is often iced rather than broken. Use a lock de-icer; forcing the key can snap it and add broken key extraction to the job.
Doors that move. Frost and thaw can shift a door in its frame, so a bolt that met the strike plate squarely in fall may drag by spring. Check it each spring, and if it drags, say so when you ask about repair.

For upkeep, use a dry lubricant on cylinders, since oil holds dust, and clear drifts from the foot of the door.

Frame houses and masonry

Most first residents of the Original Townsite of Eagle Rock lived in modest gable-front frame houses, where a door that drags can often be re-hung or its strike moved. In the stone and basalt houses that came first on Ridge Avenue, and in downtown's stone buildings, a door hung in masonry cannot easily be reset in its opening, so adjusting the hinges, strike and latch is the usual first step.

Renters with a broken door

The Attorney General's Landlord and Tenant Manual (July 2026) gives broken or missing doors and windows as an example of conditions that may violate local or state housing standards. Under Idaho Code 6-320(d), the tenant serves written notice listing each problem, and if the landlord has not fixed it within three days, the tenant may sue. Read your lease, and tell the landlord, before arranging a repair yourself.
