Why rekeying comes up in Idaho Falls

Rekeying changes the pins inside a lock cylinder so a new key works and the old ones stop working, while the lock itself stays on the door. In Idaho Falls, 27.8 percent of homes were built before 1960, according to Census Bureau estimates for 2024. A house that old may have had many owners, tenants and contractors, and there is rarely a record of every key handed out. Hardware you may find

• Shared garages. Some detached double-bay garages in the numbered streets' Eleventh Street Historic District were built on the line between two lots, for the neighbors to share. If yours is one, find out who else holds a key to its doors before deciding which locks go on your new key.
• Mixed brands. An old house often ends up with different lock brands on different doors, and not every combination can share one key. Photograph each lock and each key.

Renters and landlords

Statewide, about 28.3 percent of Idaho households rent, against 34.7 percent nationally. What Idaho law and the Attorney General's Landlord and Tenant Manual (July 2026) say about locks:

• Idaho Code 6-320(a) lists the landlord failures a tenant can sue over, including weather protection, working plumbing and heating, and smoke detectors. Locks and keys are not named.
• The manual's move-in and move-out checklist has lines for door locks and knobs and for window latches and locks. At move-in, a tenant can ask in writing whether the locks were rekeyed after the last tenant.
• Read the lease before rekeying a rental.
