Registered buildings and their entrances

The city's historic properties list includes three commercial and public buildings: the 1931 U.S. Post Office and Courthouse on Stewart Avenue, the 1944 Huntridge Theater on East Charleston Boulevard and John Mull's Meats (1953) on Thom Boulevard. All three are on the city's register, so a new door or storefront there can be a planning matter as well as a hardware job.

Register properties follow extra procedures under Title 19.10.150 of the zoning code. The city's alteration guide sends work that needs a building permit to the Historic Preservation Commission first, sometimes as a Certificate of Appropriateness. For an entrance, or a smaller hardware change you are unsure about, the Historic Preservation Officer is the person to ask.

Apartment complexes and key control

Census estimates for 2020 to 2024 put 8.6 percent of Clark County homes in buildings of 50 or more units, and a complex that size holds a great many keys. NRS 118A.332, added in 2025, sets key-control duties for landlords who own more than 50 units on one parcel in a county of 100,000 or more people, Clark included: written key policies, an on-site log of every key issued and returned, and criminal record checks for job applicants with key access. Staff and tenant turnover

When a manager, employee or tenant leaves, every key they held is an open question. Rekeying the affected cylinders retires those keys. A master key system lets managers open every door while staff keys open only their own areas, and a restricted keyway can limit who is able to have copies made. Whichever setup you choose, keep any key log current, and remove a departing person's code.

What to include in a request

• the business name and street address
• the building type: storefront, office suite, warehouse or apartment complex
• the doors and hardware involved, such as glass storefront doors, panic bars or gates
• whether the building is on the city's register
• who is authorized to approve the work
