Do Las Vegas doors suit a smart lock?

Housing here is young: about 45 percent of Clark County homes were built in 2000 or later, per the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey. Before buying a keypad or smart lock, measure the existing deadbolt so the new one fits the door's holes.

Approvals in large buildings and rentals

If you rent in a large complex, ask the leasing office before installing anything. NRS 118A.332 treats access codes and electronic keys as keys, and a covered landlord, one with more than 50 units on one parcel in a county of 100,000 or more people, such as Clark, must log every key issued and returned. Ask how a code you set would be handled.

Short-term rental hosts face a door rule too. Las Vegas Municipal Code Chapter 6.75 covers homes rented to guests for less than 31 consecutive days, and the city's Code Enforcement inspection overview says exterior doors must open from inside without a key or any special knowledge or effort, and must not be blocked. A deadbolt keyed on the inside conflicts with that. Locks with an inside thumb-turn, including many keypad and smart locks, open without one. This is general information, not legal advice.

Heat, batteries and a backup key

Batteries and door hardware both face Las Vegas summers, when NOAA puts the average high at 102°F. Check smart-lock and fob batteries before the season, and look up the maker's stated temperature range for a door that takes afternoon sun. Keep a physical key or the mechanical override somewhere safe indoors, not in a car parked in the sun.
