Las Vegas summer highs average 102°F, according to NOAA, and a spare fob left in a parked car sits in that heat. Keep spares indoors and check fob batteries before the season starts. A weak fob is not always an unprogrammed one, and shorter range or several presses to unlock often point to the battery. Try a fresh battery first, and if the car still does not respond, the fob may need programming or replacing.

What a fob actually does

A fob usually has two jobs. The buttons lock, unlock and open the trunk, and on many cars a chip inside also lets the engine start. Programming the buttons and matching the chip can be separate steps, so say which function has stopped working: the remote buttons, push-button start, or both.

• year, make and model, and whether the car has push-button start
• how many fobs should work at the end, and which ones are lost
• a photo ID and the registration
