Safety comes before the lock

Some situations are not a locksmith's to handle first. Call 911 when:

  • A child or pet is locked in a car
  • Someone may still be inside after a break-in
  • Anyone is hurt, or there is smoke or fire

After a break-in, ask police whether they need to see the damage before anything is repaired, and get a report number.

What counts as urgent in Bend

  • A door that will not lock. A splintered frame or broken deadbolt after a break-in leaves a home open. On a lot with accessory dwelling units, name the affected dwelling.
  • Locked out in severe weather, especially with children, medication or a running stove inside. If you cannot get into shelter, wait with a neighbor, in a car or in a nearby business.
  • The only key locked inside, when you cannot safely wait.
  • A forced business door. If the building has a Knox box or a gate padlock, say so: under Oregon Fire Code section 506.2, a changed or rekeyed lock triggers a notice to the fire code official, covered on the commercial locksmith page.
  • Wildfire. Oregon's 2020 Labor Day fires burned more than 2,000 structures. If you are told to evacuate, leave, because a lock can be dealt with later.
  • A landlord lockout. Under ORS 90.375, a tenant unlawfully removed or excluded by a landlord may seek a court order to recover possession or end the rental agreement, and can recover up to two months' periodic rent or twice actual damages, whichever is greater. That is a legal matter, so get legal help rather than forcing the door.
