Which door you are locked out of

Ogden lockouts start with the building. In East Central, the city's original residential area between downtown and Harrison Boulevard, many older houses were divided into apartments after World War II, and apartment buildings followed from the 1960s to the 1980s. There you may be shut out of a shared entry, your own unit door, or both. The shared entry belongs to the owner or manager, so tell them too.

In Mount Ogden, the 1950s and 1960s ranch homes largely south of 30th Street mostly have attached two-car garages. The door from the garage into the house is a second way in, so say whether the garage is open and whether that inside door is locked. The 1920s and 1930s Tudors and bungalows near 26th to 28th streets mostly have detached rear garages, which do not lead into the house.

West Ogden's homes are mostly single-story, and those built from 1990 to 2013 are mostly manufactured homes on permanent foundations. Their exterior doors may use different hardware from a site-built house, so send a photo of the lock.

Proof that you live there

Have proof ready: a photo ID showing the address, or a lease or deed in your name. If you are waiting outside, wait somewhere heated and say where you are.

If the owner changed the locks

A landlord's lockout is a legal matter before it is a lock problem. Utah Code Section 78B-6-814 makes it unlawful for an owner to willfully exclude a tenant except by judicial process, with an exception for abandoned premises. Under Section 78B-6-815, a tenant who has not left must dispute an owner's declaration of abandonment in writing within one day, not counting weekends or court holidays.
