Which door you are locked out of

About 9 percent of Salt Lake County's homes sit in buildings of 50 or more units, against about 7 percent nationally, according to the 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey. In a building that size, a lockout can involve two doors: the lobby or street entry, and your own unit. The manager or front desk usually controls the first, so reach them before anyone works on the unit door.

In the Avenues the picture changes. Those blocks began with four lots each, and many lots were later divided, so a house can stand beside one built decades earlier or later. The door next to yours may share little with yours, so say what yours is made of and whether it looks original.

Proof that you live there

Have photo ID showing the address ready. If your ID shows an older address, a lease, a deed or other paperwork with your name and the address fills the gap. If those papers are inside the locked home, mention it in the request.

A renter whose owner changed the locks is in a different position. Utah Code 78B-6-814 bars an owner from willfully shutting a tenant out except through judicial process, and abandoned premises are the exception. Under 78B-6-815, a tenant who has not left must dispute an owner's abandonment declaration in writing within a day, not counting weekends or court holidays. Waiting out a snowfall

Per NOAA, the salty Great Salt Lake stays unfrozen, and cold air moving across it now and then leaves heavy bands of snow east and south of the lake. If snow is falling while you wait, stay in a car, with a neighbor or in a nearby business rather than on the step, and leave a number where you can be reached.

Give the neighborhood or the nearest cross streets, plus the type of building, when you request house lockout help. If a lost key caused the lockout, lock rekeying is the follow-up worth asking about.
