Weber County, around Ogden, has the oldest housing of the four large Wasatch Front counties. In the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey its median home was built in 1984, and about a quarter of its homes date from before 1960. Ogden's East Central planning area counts more than 800 bungalows from the 1920s, about 36 percent of its buildings.

A door from that era may hold a mortise lock set into a pocket cut in its edge, or it may have been bored for a cylinder deadbolt, sometimes more than once. A standard tubular deadbolt does not fit a mortise pocket, and old holes that do not line up with new hardware may need a cover or reinforcing plate. Photograph the door edge before buying anything.

Historic districts: ask first

Jefferson Avenue between 25th and 27th streets is known for Victorian homes, and the Eccles district, between 25th and 26th streets and Van Buren and Jackson avenues, for Prairie style houses. Both are on the Ogden City Register of Historic Places, where the Landmarks Commission must review repairs that alter existing features or change their materials. New bore holes in an original door, or replacing the door itself, could fall under that, so raise it with the city's preservation planner before work starts. • a mix of mismatched hardware has built up over decades and you want one key and one finish
