Car Lockout in Ogden, UT

Safety first

If a child, a pet or anyone who cannot get out is locked inside a car, call 911 first. A closed car can overheat in direct sun and lose its warmth on a winter night, and neither is safe for someone inside. A locksmith request does not replace that call.

Locked out on a snowy street

Ogden's Snow Removal Requirement Ordinance (10-5-21) bars street parking while it is snowing, when snow removal is apparent or imminent, and once snow or ice has built up to an inch or more. A car left snowbound on the street for more than 48 hours may be treated as abandoned and towed. State roads and properties without a driveway approach are exempt, and the mayor or a designee can exempt streets that are short on off-street parking. If a lockout leaves your car on a residential street as snow begins, say so in your request. This is general information, not legal advice.

Downtown and near Weber State

The Central Business District plan puts downtown between 20th and 27th streets, from the railroad tracks east to Adams Avenue. A lockout there can mean very different spots:

• The Junction's parking terrace: give the level and the nearest stairwell or stall number.
• Historic 25th Street: give the nearest shop or gallery and which side of the street.
• Near the Wall Avenue FrontRunner station: name the street and which side of the station the car is on.

On 36th Street by Weber State University, where many houses are rented to students, give the house number rather than "by campus," and say whether the car is in a driveway or at the curb.

What to send

• the exact location, with the nearest numbered street and avenue
• the year, make, model and color
• where the keys are: in the ignition, on a seat, in the trunk, or unknown
• whether the engine is running
• a photo ID and the registration, to show once the door is open
