Homes and locks in West Valley City

West Valley City incorporated in 1980, combining the communities of Granger, Hunter, Chesterfield and Redwood.

Brick ranch neighborhoods. Redwood, Chesterfield and East Granger on the east side, and West Granger and Hunter in the center of the city, are mostly brick ranch homes from the 1960s and 1970s. Count the side and basement doors as well as the front before a lock rekeying.

Westshire. Directly south of Valley Fair Mall, Westshire has 160 Mid-Century Modern homes built in the 1960s and 1970s by modernist architect Ron Molen. If you want hardware that suits the original doors, say so in a lock replacement request.

Western neighborhoods. West Hunter, Woodhaven and Oquirrh are mostly planned developments from the 1990s and 2000s.

Manufactured homes. The city's general plan says about 30 percent of all mobile homes in Salt Lake County are in West Valley City. If you live in one, say so in your request.

Fairbourne Station apartments. The city center near City Hall added apartment buildings completed in 2014, 2021 and 2024. Say whether the problem is your unit door or the building entry.

Businesses and buildings

The area around 3500 South and Constitution Boulevard (2700 West) has traditionally been commercial. Valley Fair Mall was built in the early 1970s and has been renovated in phases since 2006. The Fairbourne Station redevelopment has added two hotels, a movie theater, an office building, a medical building and a police headquarters.

The city's plan calls for redeveloping aging commercial buildings on the north side of 3500 South between 2700 West and 3200 West. For a commercial locksmith request, name the building and say whether it is a front or rear door.

Car trouble in West Valley City

Section 22-2-115 of the city code bars parking on any street:

• while snow or ice on the roadway is one inch deep or more, and
• for longer than 72 consecutive hours.

The city's snow removal page also bars street parking during a snowstorm and for 24 hours after it ends, and says plows reach cul-de-sacs and dead-end roads last. If your car is on a cul-de-sac after a storm, mention it when you request a car lockout.

Fairbourne Station, at the West Valley Central stop on the TRAX Green Line, has a UTA park-and-ride lot and a parking structure. If you are locked out there, give the lot or level.

Local rules worth knowing

A city questionnaire for rental license applicants notes that Single Unit Dwelling zones do not allow boarding homes or duplexes. Questions that bear on doors include:

• Will rooms within the home be rented individually?
• Can every bedroom reach the kitchen or living areas on its floor through only one door?

The questionnaire is not required for internal accessory dwelling units that meet Section 7-7-115.5 of the city's zoning ordinance. That section requires the owner of record to live in the house as a primary residence, and prohibits these units in a mobile home, on lots of 6,000 square feet or less, and in single-unit homes east of 4000 West.
