Proving the car is yours

A new car key has to be cut to the lock and, on most cars built in the last few decades, programmed so the engine will start with it. Because that key can start the car, expect to show proof of ownership: a photo ID and a registration or title in the same name. If the papers are in the glove box of the locked car, say so; they can be checked once the door is open. If the car is registered to someone else, such as a parent (say, for a student renting near Weber State University) or an employer, have that person reachable or bring signed permission.

Where the car is kept

Cutting and programming a key needs the car present, so where it is kept shapes the job.

What to have ready
