Ten closely grouped buildings make up the Exchange Place Historic District, built around a narrow one-block street on South Main Street between 300 and 400 South. Construction ran from 1903 to 1917, using protected steel frames and masonry considered fireproof. Its twelve-story Boston and Newhouse Buildings were regarded as Utah's first skyscrapers.

Buildings like these have street entrances, suite doors, stair doors and service doors, so a request that names the exact door, the floor and the suite points the work at the right lock.

Because Exchange Place is a local historic district, Section 21A.34.020 of the Zoning Ordinance applies to exterior work on its designated properties. Tenants, staff and keys

Commercial keys spread. A suite that changes tenants inherits whatever keys the last one handed out, and staff turnover sends keys home with former employees. A few habits keep that in check:

1. Keep a key log of who holds which key, and when it was issued and returned.
2. Rekey suite locks when a tenant leaves, before the next one moves in.
3. In a multi-tenant building, a master key system lets management open every suite while each tenant's key opens only its own.
4. Where copies are the worry, a restricted keyway limits who can have keys cut.

Before you book

Utah's Division of Consumer Protection says it generally does not have jurisdiction over purchases made by businesses or for business use. Read a commercial work order closely and settle the scope before signing.
