What makes a lock problem urgent here

Some lock problems can wait for a convenient day. These usually can't:

• A door that won't close or lock after a windstorm. The Western Regional Climate Center notes that winds near the canyon mouths on the Wasatch Mountains' western slopes sometimes reach damaging levels. A storm door torn off its closer, a split jamb or a strike pulled loose can leave a house open for the night.
• A lockout in winter cold. A lockout that is a nuisance at noon becomes a safety matter after dark, most of all for a child, an older adult or anyone with nowhere warm to wait.
• A lock jammed shut on the only exit from a home or the entry to a business.
• Someone trapped inside, whether a young child, an animal or a vulnerable adult, in a locked car or room. Call 911 before you call anyone else.

After a break-in

Call the police first, and leave the door and lock as they are until officers have seen them. Ask for the report number, and don't stay inside if you don't feel safe.

If you rent, that report can matter later. Utah Code 57-22-5.1 allows a renter who is a burglary victim to require the owner to install a new lock, on providing a police report or a protective order issued after a hearing, with the installation paid for by the renter. What to include in an urgent request

• whether anyone is hurt, trapped or in danger; if so, call 911 before anything else
• the address or nearest cross streets, and the neighborhood
• which door, and what happened: a lockout, a broken lock, a damaged frame or a break-in
• whether police have been called, and the report number
• photos of the door, lock and frame, if you can take them safely
• for a rental or a business, who owns or manages the property
