A young state with some very old doors

According to the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey, the median Utah home was built in 1992. The Avenues, a local historic district since 1978, runs much further back. Homes there go back to the late 1860s, and more than a hundred of them are architect-designed, in styles running from Queen Anne to Prairie. A door that old may carry holes from earlier hardware, so a new lock has to suit the door as it stands today, patches and all.

Approvals in historic districts

Besides the Avenues, the city's local historic districts are Capitol Hill, Central City, City Creek/Memory Grove, Exchange Place, South Temple, University, Westmoreland Place and Yalecrest. Section 21A.34.020 of the Salt Lake City Zoning Ordinance sets the standards for designated properties. Before exterior work starts, other than paint color and minor maintenance, the owner needs a Certificate of Appropriateness, and a minor-alteration application exists for windows and doors. City staff approve applications that meet the criteria, while more complex projects go before the Historic Landmark Commission.

Measure before you replace

A replacement that fits starts with the door:

• thickness, and backset (the distance from the door edge to the center of the lock hole)
• whether the lock is a mortise lock set into a pocket in the door edge or a bored lock through a round hole
• the latch face and strike, plus any old holes or filled patches around them
• photos of both faces of the door and its edge

Send these with the neighborhood and the house's approximate age when you ask about lock replacement. If a worn lock still has a sound body, lock repair may keep the original in the door, and lock rekeying suits hardware that is fine when only the keys need to change.
