If someone is inside

If a child or pet is locked in the car, call 911 before anything else. The Western Regional Climate Center describes strong daytime sun across Utah, and a closed car in the sun heats well past the outside temperature. Nights cool rapidly as well, so a car left shut can turn cold soon after dark.

Snow rules and street parking

Section 22-2-115 of the West Valley City code bars parking on any street while snow or ice on the roadway is one inch deep or more. The city's snow removal page also bars street parking during a snowstorm and for a full day after it ends. If you are locked out of a car on the street as snow starts, leaving it there overnight could conflict with those rules, so say in your request that the car is on the street and snow is falling.

Park-and-ride lots

Fairbourne Station, at the West Valley Central stop on the TRAX Green Line, has a UTA park-and-ride lot and a parking structure. If you are locked out there, give the lot or the level of the structure and the nearest stairwell or entrance, since an address alone will not locate a car inside a structure. What to send

1. The exact spot: street address, cross streets, or lot and level.
2. The car's make, model, year and color.
3. Whether the keys are visible inside and whether the engine is running.
4. Photo ID, plus a note if the registration is in the glove box or elsewhere inside.
