What Utah weather does to locks

Three features of Utah's climate show up at a keyway.

• Snow and refrozen meltwater. NOAA points out that the Great Salt Lake, being salty, stays unfrozen, and that cold air moving over it occasionally drops heavy bands of snow to the east and south. Snow that melts on a door can run into the keyway and turn to ice again overnight. Use lock de-icer rather than hot water, which only adds more water to turn back to ice.
• Big swings between day and night. The Western Regional Climate Center describes strong daytime sun and rapid cooling after dark. Doors and frames move as they warm and cool, so a deadbolt that drags only on cold mornings often points to door alignment rather than a failed lock. Moving the strike plate or tightening the hinges can fix it without new parts.
• Spring dust. The same source says dust storms occur mainly over western Utah in spring. Grit in a keyway makes the key drag and wears the pins. Clean it out and use a dry graphite or PTFE lubricant, since oil holds dust.

Older hardware in Chesterfield and Hunter

Chesterfield, on the east side, and Hunter, in the center of the city, are mostly brick ranch neighborhoods from the 1960s and 1970s. Locks on doors that old tend to fail in small ways first: a loose knob, a latch spring that no longer snaps back, a cylinder that turns only with a jiggle. Those are usually repairs. When parts are no longer made for the lockset, lock replacement is the practical route.

Simple upkeep

1. Before winter, puff dry lubricant into each exterior keyway and work the key a few times.
2. Tighten loose screws on strike plates, hinges and trim.
3. Check that new weatherstripping is not pushing the door away from the frame so the bolt binds.
