A new key can start a car, so have photo ID and a title or registration in the same name ready to show the car is yours. If the car is registered to a spouse, parent or employer, be ready to involve that person. If your paperwork is lost or out of date, your state motor-vehicle agency can issue a replacement. Rental and company cars usually go through the rental company or fleet manager instead.

Where the car is sitting

• On a city street. Section 22-2-115 of the West Valley City code, titled Time Limitations, bars parking on any street for longer than 72 consecutive hours. • Commercial lots. In the traditionally commercial area around 3500 South and Constitution Boulevard, and at Valley Fair Mall, which dates from the early 1970s, private lots set their own rules. Let the property's management know the car is waiting on a key.
• Hotels at Fairbourne Station. The Fairbourne Station redevelopment added two hotels. If you lose a key while staying at one, give the hotel name and where the car is parked.

What to have ready

1. The VIN, visible through the windshield at the base of the driver's side and printed on the registration and title.
2. Make, model and year, and the key type: plain metal key, key with built-in remote, flip key or push-to-start fob.
3. Whether any working key remains. Copying a working key is usually simpler than starting from none.
4. The car's exact location: street, lot name or hotel.
