Why Meridian locks get new keys

Rekeying resets the pins inside a cylinder so the old keys stop working and a new key takes over. The lock body, handle and trim stay on the door.

Meridian is young. Census Bureau estimates for 2024 put 75.1 percent of its homes in buildings from 2000 or later, and 49.1 percent from 2010 or later. In a house that recent, keys handed to builders, tradespeople and earlier owners may still work. The hardware is usually sound, which is when rekeying fits: same locks, new key.

Owners moving in

After closing, rekey every exterior cylinder, not just the front door. The door from an attached garage and the side gate lock are the ones people forget. Where the locks share a keyway, they can all be set to a single key, so one key opens the whole house and the key ring gets shorter.

Landlords and tenants

Rentals are 28.3 percent of Idaho households, and each change of tenant is a natural point to rekey. The tenant-suit list in Idaho Code 6-320(a) covers items such as weather protection, plumbing and smoke detectors; locks and keys are not on it. The Attorney General's Landlord and Tenant Manual (July 2026) fills in the practical side:

• Its move-in checklist includes door locks and knobs, so note their condition at the start of a tenancy and put a question in writing about whether anyone rekeyed after the last tenant moved out.
• Check the lease before swapping a cylinder. According to the manual, it should spell out when the landlord may come in.

What to include in a request

Count the exterior locks, note any brand name on the keys or faceplates, and say which doors should share one key. Say which subdivision or complex the home is in, with the closest cross streets.
