How Idaho weather wears a lock

NOAA's Idaho climate summary ties precipitation to elevation: more than 40 inches a year at some northern mountain sites, under 10 at some southwestern ones, and about 10 to 20 inches of snow in the southern lowlands. Nampa's own snow and ice control guidance shows that winter reaches its streets too. Three wear patterns matter for a lock:

• Dust. In dry places, fine dust packs into keyways and coats latch bolts, and oil turns it to paste. Wipe the keyway clean and use a dry lubricant instead.
• Ice and thaw. Light snow melts on a sunny afternoon, runs into the latch and strike, and turns to ice overnight. A bolt that sticks on winter mornings and loosens by noon points to water in the lock body. Thaw it with de-icer, never by forcing the key.
• Sun. A steel or dark-painted door in afternoon sun expands, and a deadbolt that throws cleanly in the morning can drag on the strike plate by evening.

Older hardware and door alignment

The city says Old Nampa's bungalows were built between 1920 and 1940. On hardware that old, springs, levers and latches can often be cleaned, adjusted or swapped without replacing the whole lock. Many lock problems are really door problems: a sagging hinge or a shifted strike plate pulls the bolt out of line, so test the door before blaming the lock.

Repairs in a rental

The Idaho Attorney General's manual for landlords and tenants lists broken or missing doors and windows among conditions that may fall short of local or state housing standards. The tenant's route runs through Idaho Code 6-320(d): a written notice naming each problem, and if three days pass without a fix, the tenant may sue. Simple upkeep

1. Twice a year, puff dry lubricant into the keyway and work the key.
2. Close the door slowly and watch whether the bolt enters the strike without pushing.
3. Tighten loose hinge and strike screws.
