What melting snow and dry air do to a lock

NOAA's Idaho climate summary puts snowfall in the state's southern lowlands at roughly 10 to 20 inches and says some southwestern sites get under 10 inches of precipitation a year. Melting snow and dusty air leave three recurring faults on a door:

• Ice in the latch. Snow that melts on a sunny afternoon can trickle into a latch or keyway and turn to ice after dark. If the key will not turn in the morning, use a lock de-icer and wait; forcing it bends pins or snaps the key.
• Grit. Where rain is scarce, fine dust works into cylinders and bolt mechanisms. Wipe out a sticky lock and use graphite or another dry lubricant; oil collects dust.
• Door movement. Seasons shift doors and frames. If a deadbolt throws easily with the door open but drags when it is closed, the bolt is rubbing the strike plate; the fix is at the strike or hinges, not inside the lock.

Older and newer hardware

The comprehensive plan expects Old Town's existing buildings to stay in service, so some doors there may carry older locks. A worn cylinder can sometimes be rebuilt; where parts are no longer made, replacement is the realistic answer. In the 75.1 percent of Meridian homes dating from 2000 or later, the faults are simpler: loose handle screws, a latch that stopped catching after the door settled, or a garage deadbolt worn by daily use.

The Attorney General's Landlord and Tenant Manual (July 2026) offers broken or missing doors and windows as an example of a condition that may breach local or state housing standards.
