Do Meridian doors suit a smart lock?

Most probably do. Doors in newer homes are likely drilled to the standard sizes smart deadbolts are made for, and the 2024 Census estimates put 49.1 percent of the city's homes in buildings from 2010 or later. Before buying, check that:

• The deadbolt throws without pushing, pulling or lifting the door. A motor fighting a dragging bolt stalls and drains batteries.
• The bore and backset match the lock's listed specifications.
• There is room on the inside face for the motor housing, especially near a wall, railing or storm door.

Old Town is different. It is the historic downtown, its district boundary mostly following the historic plat, so a door there may need more fitting work; a mortise lock rules out many retrofit models.

Apartments, condos and rentals

Meridian's comprehensive plan places townhouse, condominium and apartment areas at eight or more units per acre. In those buildings, get written approval from the landlord, manager or association before installing anything, since unit doors may be keyed to a building system. The Idaho Attorney General's landlord and tenant manual expects a lease to address the landlord's right of entry, so check whether yours expects the landlord to hold a working key or code. Keep a working mechanical key or keyed override, and store a spare with a neighbor or relative rather than outside the door. A dead battery on a January night is when you will want it.
