Do Nampa's doors suit a smart lock?

Most smart deadbolts are built for a standard bored door: a round hole through the face and a smaller one in the edge. About 53.8 percent of Nampa's homes, by 2024 Census estimates, are in buildings from 2000 or later, and doors of that age usually take one with little or no modification. Measure the door's thickness and the backset before buying.

Older doors need a closer look. In Old Nampa's 1920-1940 bungalows, an original door may have a mortise lock, thin panels, or earlier holes that do not line up with a modern template. Some smart locks replace only the inside half of an existing deadbolt and leave the outside hardware alone.

Rentals and shared entrances

In the University District, where the city's 2009 plan found fewer owner-occupied homes than Nampa overall, more of the doors belong to landlords. In any rental, get written permission before adding or swapping a lock. The Idaho Attorney General's Landlord and Tenant Manual says a lease should spell out when the landlord may enter, so check it before fitting a lock the landlord cannot open. • Alkaline cells lose voltage in the cold, so a lock that is fine at noon can flag a low battery at dawn. Change batteries in the fall, and use lithium cells if the maker allows them.
• A keypad on a west- or south-facing door takes full afternoon sun in July, which can age seals and screens. A porch roof or overhang helps.

Keep a working key

Every smart lock needs a way in when the battery, motor or app fails. Keep the mechanical key where you can reach it if you are locked out, and find the lock's emergency power contacts if it has them.
