What makes a lock problem urgent

• Someone at risk. If a child or anyone who cannot help themselves is shut in a car or a house, call 911 first, before anyone who works on locks. A closed car in the Las Vegas Valley's summer sun is no place to wait.
• A break-in. Call the police before anything else, and leave the damaged door, frame and lock as they are until officers have seen them. Photograph everything. After that, a door that will not lock tonight is the urgent part, and if keys were taken, the locks they fit need rekeying or replacement.
• Storm damage. Summer monsoon storms flood parts of the Las Vegas Valley often, per NOAA, and Henderson shares that valley. A door that swelled, shifted or took in muddy water may not close or lock afterward, which matters most at night or when you have to leave.
• A lock that failed shut. A deadbolt jammed with the bolt thrown, and no other way in, is a lockout even with the key in hand.

When the landlord changed the locks

A tenant shut out by a landlord faces a legal question rather than a lock problem. Under NRS 118A.390, a tenant who is unlawfully removed or locked out can recover actual damages, an amount set by the court, or both. A verified complaint for expedited relief must be filed within 5 judicial days after the lockout, and the court must hold a hearing within 3 judicial days of filing. Staying safe and what to include

Wait somewhere shaded and safe, not in a closed car. If you think someone is still inside after a break-in, stay out and tell the 911 dispatcher. In the request, include:

• the address and nearest cross streets
• what happened: lockout, break-in, jammed lock or storm damage
• whether police have been called, and any report number
• a photo of the door and lock
• photo ID showing the address, or a lease or deed
