Proving the car is yours

A new key opens and starts the car, so expect to be asked to show that you own it or may drive it. Have ready:

• a photo ID
• the registration or title in your name, issued by your state motor-vehicle agency
• the VIN, found on the registration and on the dashboard where it meets the windshield, readable from outside
• any key or fob you still have, even a damaged one

If the paperwork is locked inside the car, say so when you write in. If the car is registered to someone else, such as a parent or an employer, ask in advance what authorization will be accepted.

When the car is stuck at the curb

A lost key can leave a car wherever it was last parked. Henderson presumes a vehicle abandoned once it has sat on public property for more than 48 hours (HMC 15.12.020), and HMC 10.06.040 bars leaving one on a street. Under HMC 10.06.060, a posted notice gives at least 72 hours before a tow, and a short move to dodge the limit does not count.
