Heat and the coin cell

Most fobs run on a small coin cell, and heat shortens its life. Henderson Fire Department guidance says a car's cabin can hit 125 degrees, windows down or not, and a spare fob in the glove box or console spends each summer in that. Keep spares in the house. A fob that works only up close, needs several presses or brings up a dashboard warning usually needs a fresh battery before anything else.

The same guidance advises keeping keys and remote entry devices away from children. A child playing with a fob can lock a car without anyone noticing. If a child is ever shut inside a hot car, call 911.

Dust and water

Spring brings occasional dust and sand storms to southern Nevada, per the Western Regional Climate Center. Grit works under a fob's rubber buttons until they stick or stop registering, and replacing the case or the button pad may bring the fob back without any programming. Water is harder on the circuit board. NOAA notes that flooding from summer monsoon rains is frequent in parts of the Las Vegas Valley; a fob that went through floodwater should be opened, dried with the battery out and tested. If it stays dead, its replacement will need programming to the car.

Where programming happens

Programming is done with the car present, so bring the car and every fob together. A driveway or home garage is simplest. In a master-planned community such as Anthem or Seven Hills, say how a visitor gets past any gate. If the car is on the street, give the cross streets and which side it is on.

What to have ready

• every fob for the car, including dead ones; some makes erase any fob that is not present when a new one is programmed
• the VIN, printed on the registration and on the sticker in the driver's door frame
• make, model and year, and whether the car has push-button start
• photo ID and the registration in your name
