Census Bureau estimates for 2020 to 2024 put the median Clark County home at 1998, against 1980 nationally. A newer house is not a single-owner house. One in Green Valley, Seven Hills or Anthem may have gone through resales, rentals and remodels, and each handover left keys with agents, cleaners, contractors or a neighbor. A buyer has no way to count the copies still out there.

Rekeying resets each cylinder to a new key pattern, so the old keys stop working while the existing knobs, levers and deadbolts stay on the door. The front, back and garage-entry doors can usually be set to one key.

Short-term vacation rentals

Henderson Development Code Section 19.9.4.F sets conditions for registered short-term vacation rentals. In a common-interest community, the governing documents must expressly allow the rental, apart from certain rentals registered by February 18, 2022. A host who hands guests metal keys can lose track of them, so rekeying when a key is not returned, or on a set schedule, keeps stray copies from working.

Tenants and the lease

Tenants should read the lease and ask the landlord before changing any cylinder. State law speaks to one situation. Under NRS 118A.345, once a tenant has given written notice ending the lease under that section because of domestic violence, harassment, sexual assault or stalking, the tenant, a cotenant or a household member can require a new lock at their own cost. The landlord may rekey a lock in good working condition or replace it with one of equal or better quality, may keep a key, and must refuse one to the adverse party. What to include

• whether all of them should work on one key
• a photo of each lock showing the brand name
• whether you own, rent or host short-term guests
