Heat comes first

The Henderson Fire Department warns that a car's interior can reach 125 degrees even with the windows down. If a child is locked inside, or anyone else who cannot get out, call 911 first rather than waiting for a locksmith. If the engine is running with the keys inside, say so in the request. Wait in shade, not beside the car on sunbaked pavement, and keep water with you if you can.

Pinpointing the car

Henderson's street numbering centers on Water Street and Lake Mead Parkway and differs from the rest of the Las Vegas Valley. An address can be misread when it is run through the wrong grid, so give the nearest cross streets as well.

• Rural preservation areas. Streetlights stand only at intersections and curves, and the areas leave room for equestrian trails. After dark, describe where the car is relative to the nearest lit corner, and mention any gate or trail crossing close by.
• Master-planned communities. In MacDonald Highlands, Seven Hills or Anthem, say whether the car is in a driveway, a closed garage or on the street, and how a visitor gets past any gate.
• Parking lots. Name the store or building, the row and the nearest entrance.
