What Henderson's climate does to a lock

NOAA calls Nevada the driest state, averaging about 10.2 inches of precipitation a year, so heat, grit and movement tend to wear a Henderson lock more than rust does.

• Heat. NOAA's Las Vegas figures put average summer highs at 102°F. A door facing the afternoon sun can run hotter than the air around it, so look there first when a lock stiffens in summer.
