Ownership papers to have on hand

A new key can start the car, so have papers ready in case you are asked to show ownership or authorization:

• Photo ID
• The title or current registration in your name; for a financed or leased car, whichever papers show you as the owner or authorized driver
• If both title and registration are missing, duplicates from your state motor-vehicle agency, since key work may have to wait on them

If the name on the paperwork differs from the name on your ID, for example after a marriage or with a family car, say so up front.

The car and the key

• The VIN, which shows through the windshield at the lower driver's-side corner and on the driver's door jamb
• Year, make, model and trim
• The kind of key: plain metal, transponder, flip key, or a proximity fob for push-button start
• Whether any working key or fob is left. Copying from a working key is simpler than starting from nothing, so keep a surviving key safe and mention it.

Where the car is sitting

Key work happens at the car, so where it sits shapes the visit. Downtown, ParkSmart lists One Government Center among its public facilities; give the facility name, the level and the space. In East Toledo, a large neighborhood on the east side of the Maumee River, or in Point Place, surrounded by Maumee Bay and two rivers, give the neighborhood, the street and the nearest cross street. Say whether the car starts and whether it can be moved to an open spot.

Get the total in writing

In Ohio, Administrative Code 109:4-3-05 sets estimate steps for repair and service work, such as work on the door of a Toledo home, but the rule excludes motor vehicle repair and service.
