Proof of ownership comes first

A replacement key is cut, and often programmed, for one specific vehicle, so expect to be asked to show that the car is yours. The usual pairing is a title or current registration in your name and a photo ID that matches it. If the registration was lost along with the keys, your state motor-vehicle agency can issue a duplicate. For a leased car, bring the lease; for a company vehicle, expect to need something signed by the business.

Find the car, then the key

Permit parking zones cover parts of the Short North and the University District, and a violation can end in a citation or an impound. If your keys are lost and the car has vanished from a block like that, ask the city about an impound before arranging a new key.

Get the total in writing
