Battery, damage or programming?

A fob that stops working does not always need programming. Ohio's weather is hard on small electronics.

• Cold. Coin-cell batteries lose voltage in the cold. A cell that was weak in autumn often gives out on the first bitter morning, so try a fresh one of the type printed on the old cell first.
• Heat and humidity. NOAA's Ohio summary warns of dangerous heat index values when heat meets high humidity. A fob left on a dashboard bakes, and damp air can corrode its contacts.
• Water. A fob soaked in a downpour or run through the wash should dry out completely before you test it.

If a new battery does not help, you have a replacement fob, or you want a spare added, the car needs programming.

At the car: garages and streets

Programming is done at the vehicle, so describe where it is. ParkSmart lists the Vistula garage among downtown Toledo's public garages. In a garage, give the level and space, and check that your phone has signal so you can be reached. On a street in the Warehouse District, just south of downtown, give the block and the nearest cross street. At a house, say whether the car is in a driveway or a garage and whether the garage door will open. If the car has sat unused through a cold spell, say so; a weak car battery can interrupt programming.

What to have ready

• Every fob and key that belongs to the car, working or not, because on some vehicles a newly programmed fob erases fobs that are not present
• The VIN
• The car's year and model, and whether it has push-button start
• Photo ID, and the title or registration
• Any part number printed on the fob or its case
