Cold, heat and the coin cell

Most key fobs run on a small lithium coin cell, and cold lowers its output, so a tired battery tends to show itself on a winter morning: the remote works only up close, or a push-button car stops detecting the fob. The owner's manual usually shows a backup spot where a weak fob can still start the car. Summer is hard on fobs too. NOAA's Ohio summary warns of dangerous heat index values in humid weather, and a fob left on a dashboard soaks up that heat, which shortens battery life. Rain or snow that gets into a cracked case can corrode the contacts.

Try a fresh battery first. If the fob still fails, it may need reprogramming, a new case or a replacement.

Garages and lobbies

The Short North's newer buildings of ten stories or more often combine apartments, shops and offices, and a garage gate or lobby door there may run on a fob system the building controls. That system belongs to the building. A car fob is a separate device, and programming one does not change it. Programming needs the car itself, so for a car in a building garage give the level and any access instructions, and for a car on the street give the block and nearest cross street.

What to have ready

• every working fob and key for the car; on some vehicles, programming a new fob erases any that are not present
• the ownership papers and VIN described on the car key replacement page
• the make, model and year
• where the new fob came from, since some used fobs cannot be set up for a second car
• what is wrong: dead, working only sometimes, broken case or lost
