Snow, plows and side streets

The city's Snow and Ice Control Plan sends crews to arterial roads first and residential collectors next. Residential streets get plow-only service, with no salt, once 4 inches or more of snow falls, and the plan asks drivers to park off street if possible. A car left on a side street can end up behind a ridge of plowed snow. If yours is locked and also plowed in, say so and how deep the snow is around it, because a buried door cannot be worked on until it is reachable. The city's Warrior Watch site shows when a street was last serviced.

Permit zones and street parking

The Division of Parking Services runs permit parking zones, including in the Short North, the University District, East Franklinton and around Children's Hospital, and a vehicle in violation can be cited and impounded. Heat, cold and anyone inside

Heat is the bigger danger in a locked car. NOAA's Ohio summary warns of dangerous heat index values in humid summers, and a closed car gets far hotter than the air around it. Cold matters once the engine is off, too. If a person or an animal is trapped inside the car, call 911 right away rather than waiting for a locksmith.

• the street and nearest cross street, or the lot name
• the make, model and year
• where the keys are: in the ignition, on a seat, in the trunk, or lost
• whether the car is in a permit zone or on an unplowed street
• whether your ID and registration are with you or locked inside
