Snow rules and a locked car

In a Toledo winter, where the car is parked can matter as much as the lock. The city's snow removal guidance says that in extreme weather the Safety Director may ban parking on TARTA bus routes and snow emergency routes, and police can then ticket and tow vehicles left there. An emergency is possible in a Stage 3 storm (3 to 5 inches, or drifting) and will be declared in a Stage 4 storm (over 5 inches with blizzard conditions).

If the locked car is on a bus route or snow emergency route while snow is falling, lead with that when you ask for help. Residential side streets are plowed only when a Stage 3 storm brings more than 3 inches, so a car at the curb after lighter snow may sit in unplowed snow. Clear the driver's door and lock before trying the key. This is general information, not legal advice.

Downtown garages and Hensville

ParkSmart, downtown Toledo's public parking system, lists the Port Lawrence and Superior garages among its facilities. Inside a garage, the street address helps less than the garage name, the level and the nearest stair or elevator. Hensville is the pedestrian mall behind Fifth Third Field, home of the Toledo Mud Hens. If you parked nearby for a game or a night out, give the street and the nearest corner, not a venue name.

Heat, cold and anyone inside

A child or a pet locked inside is a 911 call before a locksmith call, in July or in a Stage 4 blizzard. If the engine is running with the keys inside, clear snow from around the exhaust pipe so fumes cannot build up.
