When a lock problem is urgent in Toledo

Some lock problems cannot wait, because someone is at risk or a building is left open. Four situations qualify:

• Dangerous cold. The city treats more than 5 inches of snow with blizzard conditions as a Stage 4 snow emergency. Being shut out in a blizzard or on a bitter night, especially with a child, an older adult or someone unwell, is urgent.
• Summer heat. A child, a pet or anyone unwell shut inside a hot house or car is a 911 call first, not a locksmith call.
• A door that will not secure. After a break-in, or a storm that damages a door or frame, a door that cannot be locked leaves the building open overnight.
• A business left open. A shop, bar or restaurant near Hensville or in the Warehouse District whose door was forced or will not lock.

Safety comes before the lock

• After a break-in, call police first and leave the door as it is until they have seen it. Once they are done, the door can be secured and damaged hardware changed; see lock replacement.
• If someone inside may be hurt, or you smell gas or smoke, call 911 first. Emergency crews handle forced entry when a life may be at risk.
• If a landlord has locked you out, Ohio Revised Code 5321.15(A) bars a landlord of residential premises from trying to recover possession by excluding a tenant, cutting off utilities or services, or threatening an unlawful act, other than as provided in Chapters 1923, 5303 and 5321. What to send

• The neighborhood and a cross street, for example in the Old West End, East Toledo or Point Place
• What happened: lockout, broken key, damaged lock or a door that will not close
• Who is there, and whether anyone is at risk
• Whether police have been called, and any report number
• For a vehicle, whether it is on a snow emergency route
