Do Bend doors suit a smart lock?

Many do. Newer houses, which include most of Bend's, usually have bored deadbolts, the type most keypad and smart locks are made to replace. Before choosing a model, check:

• Door thickness and backset, which the lock's specifications must cover
• Whether the deadbolt throws without pushing or lifting the door, since a motorized bolt strains against a misaligned strike
• Room inside for the lock housing, and clearance for a storm door outside

Older doors take more care. Nearly all homes in the Drake Park Neighborhood Historic District were built between 1910 and 1954, and hardware from those decades may not suit a standard bore, so measure before you buy.

Rentals, accessory units and vacation homes

• Tenants. Get the landlord's agreement before swapping a lock, and settle how the landlord will get in.
• Landlords. ORS 90.320(1)(m) allows a phone-app access control system as a means of unlocking entrance doors, provided the landlord also offers at least one alternative, such as an access code, fob, key card or other tangible key. This is general information, not legal advice.
• Accessory units. Bend allows up to two accessory dwelling units beside a house, townhome or manufactured home. Giving each dwelling its own code or user profile lets one household's access change without touching the others.
• Vacation rentals. A new code for each stay avoids handing out metal keys, and whoever manages the rental should know how to reset a code.

Condominium and townhome associations may have rules on exterior hardware, so check first.

Power, keypads and a backup key

Learn what the lock does when its batteries run low, use the battery type the manufacturer lists, and keep the mechanical key or override that came with it. Store a spare somewhere other than inside the house.
