Dead battery or lost programming?

Rule out the battery before booking key fob programming. The small coin cell inside a fob loses output in cold weather, and Bend sits on the dry east side of the Cascades, where dust is part of the picture too:

• Cold. A fob that works in the kitchen may barely unlock the car on a winter morning. Warm it in a pocket for a moment and try again.
• Dust. Grit in the seams can make buttons stick or fail, so wipe the case.
• Winter wet. Winter is the wet season across most of Oregon. A fob that got soaked should dry out with the battery removed before you judge it.

A range that shrinks gradually usually points to the battery. A fob that does nothing after a fresh battery, or a push-button car that says no key is detected, may need programming or a replacement fob.

Where programming happens

Programming works through the car's own system, so the car has to be reachable, with room to open the driver's door. Gather before programming

• The year, make and model, and whether the car has push-button start
• For a fob bought elsewhere, the part number or FCC ID printed on it
• Photo ID and the registration
