Old doors in Franklin, newer ones at the edges

Replacing a lock swaps the hardware itself, not only the keys, and the age of the door decides what fits. Some of the earliest settled parts of Provo and Utah County lie in Franklin, and the city's neighborhood plan counts more than 41 percent of its residential buildings as built before 1940. A door that old may carry a mortise lock set into a pocket in its edge, or show the filled holes of earlier locks. A modern deadbolt does not always drop in, and the choice may come down to a new mortise body or a plate that covers the old cutout.

Growth has gone elsewhere. The General Plan points to significant residential development west of I-15, in Northwest District neighborhoods including Grandview North, Rivergrove and Brickyard, and in the eastern foothills, where roughly 5,200 feet of elevation marks the approximate edge of urban development. Doors in homes that new are usually bored for standard hardware, so replacement is mostly about wear: a lever that droops, a finish worn to bare metal or a bolt that no longer throws all the way.

A converted Franklin house or accessory apartment may need two kinds of lock, one for the shared outside door and one for each unit. Replace them as a set so the key plan still makes sense.

For BYU contracted housing, the Off-Campus Housing Handbook sets a floor: a deadbolt or deadlocking latch on the exterior door that takes a key from outside and no key from inside, plus a way to see who is at the door without opening it fully. A double-cylinder deadbolt, keyed on both sides, does not fit that description.

• door thickness and the distance from the door edge to the center of the knob hole
• whether the new lock should match your existing key
• for a rental, the owner's approval
