Battery first, programming second

A key fob runs on a coin cell, and many fobs that seem to have lost their programming simply have a weak battery. The Western Regional Climate Center describes sunny days that give way to steep overnight cooling across Utah, and a fob left on a dashboard by day and in a cold car overnight gets both extremes. Cold cuts a coin cell's output, so the first sign is often short range on a winter morning: the doors unlock from a few feet away but not from the porch.

Try a fresh battery of the size printed on the old one before booking. If the fob still fails, or the dash shows a key-not-detected message, it may need pairing again or replacement. Keep the spare fob in the house rather than the glove box, since heat is hard on the coin cell.

Where the car sits in Provo

Programming is done at the car, so the car has to stay put for the whole job. Utah County's attached townhouse-style homes make up about 11 percent of its housing, and where one has a garage, the car and fob may stay out of the overnight cold. Because most occupied housing in Provo is rented, though, the car may well be in an apartment lot. Send the complex, the building and the space number, and check that the property allows work in the lot.

One point of confusion in student housing: BYU's Off-Campus Housing Handbook says access is removed when a card or fob is lost, which concerns entry to the housing, not a car. A building fob comes from the property manager and a car fob is paired to the vehicle, so say which you mean.
