What makes a lock problem urgent in Provo

Safety comes first. If someone may still be inside after a break-in, or a person or animal is trapped in a car or a home, call 911 before contacting anyone else.

After that, a lock problem is urgent when it leaves you exposed. Utah nights cool steeply after sunny days, the Western Regional Climate Center notes, so being shut out late in the day can mean waiting in the cold. The center also reports strong winds, at times damaging, near canyon mouths on the Wasatch Mountains' western slopes, so a door or frame bent by a gust until it no longer latches is urgent too. So are a lock damaged in a break-in attempt, a door that will not close after forced entry and a key lost with your address on the tag.

A sticky lock that still works, a spare you want cut or a planned upgrade can be requested as ordinary lock repair or rekeying instead.

After a break-in

Call the police first and leave the door and lock as they are until officers have seen them. Get the report number.
