Proving the car is yours

A replacement car key is cut to the lock and, on most newer vehicles, programmed to the car's immobilizer, so the person asking has to show a right to the car. Bring a photo ID and the title or current registration in the same name. If the papers were locked in the car or lost with the keys, say so up front; a duplicate title or registration comes from your state motor-vehicle agency.

When the car is registered to someone else, such as a parent's car that a student drives, have the owner present or bring the owner's written permission with a copy of the registration.

Where the car waits in Provo

Without a key a car may sit longer than planned, and Provo's parking rules decide where it is safe to leave it. Provo City Code 9.31.050 treats a vehicle that stays in one spot on a street for 72 hours, without moving at least 400 feet, as a nuisance that may be towed at a police officer's direction. Count from the last time the car moved, not from the day the key went missing.

Some neighborhoods are permit parking areas, and residents of the Arlington, Belmont, Highland Park and King Henry apartments are not eligible for a permit there. Read the signs before leaving a car on a permit street while a key is made, and ask the property manager where an apartment resident may park it instead.
