Where keys snap in Meridian

A key usually breaks when it is twisted against a lock that resists: iced, worn or not fully released. Three situations stand out here.

• Shared locks in multi-unit housing. The comprehensive plan places townhouses, condominiums and apartments at eight or more units per acre. Building entries, gate locks and mailbox compartments there are turned by many residents with many copied keys, and a copy cut slightly off can bind and shear.
• Iced cylinders. On winter nights a little moisture in a keyway can turn to ice. Forcing a key into an iced lock is a common way to lose half of it; use de-icer instead.
• Older cylinders. About a quarter of Meridian's homes, by the 2024 Census estimate, are in buildings from before 2000, and some of those doors may still carry a worn keyway. A thin, much-copied key in a worn keyway is a risky pair.

What not to do

• Do not keep turning or wiggling the stub. It pushes the fragment deeper and can damage the pins.
• Do not try glue or adhesive. Glue that sets in the keyway turns an extraction into a replacement.
• Do not push a spare key in on top of the broken piece.
• If the lock is iced, stop and let it thaw before anyone tries to remove the piece.

For a mailbox lock in a complex, ask the property manager who handles it first. If the snapped key is in a shared entry, tell the manager so other residents know that door is out of use.

1. A close photo of the piece in your hand and of the keyway, showing whether any fragment sticks out.
2. Which lock it is: unit door, building entry, mailbox, padlock, car door or ignition.
3. Whether the lock is locked or open, and whether it turned before the key broke.
4. The complex name, building and unit, or the subdivision and nearest cross streets.
