What makes it urgent here

A lock problem is urgent when it leaves a person unsafe or a property open. Three cases fit that in Meridian:

  • Cold nights. Being shut out of a home in winter, especially with a child or an older person, is urgent. If anyone is at risk, call 911 first.
  • An open door after damage. A door that will not close or lock after a break-in or a storm leaves a home or business open overnight.
  • Stuck on a highway. State-run roads here are Interstate 84, Chinden Boulevard (Highway 20/26), Kuna-Meridian Road (Highway 69) and Eagle Road (Highway 55) north of the interstate, all maintained by the Idaho Transportation Department. If you are locked out beside one, get well clear of traffic and note your direction of travel and nearest cross street; if the car blocks a lane, call 911.

After a break-in

Call the police before touching the door or asking for a locksmith, and call 911 if anyone may still be inside. Let the police see the scene as you found it, and photograph the damage for your records. Once they are finished, a damaged door can be secured and the locks rekeyed or replaced.

Two checks before you book

A landlord who changes the locks to push a tenant out is doing what the Attorney General's landlord-tenant manual calls unlawful self-help. The lawful route is a court action for unlawful detainer (Idaho Code 6-303), and any removal is carried out by the sheriff under a writ of restitution. That dispute belongs with the courts or an attorney, not a locksmith.
